UREI experts please read!!

Hello, All

I just picked up 3 UREI 813Cs and have some questions for the gurus. Where can I get the foam material that surrounds the lips of the blue horn? Same for the material that should be in the ducts for aperiodic loading?

Other than needing the above and refoaming of two of the 2215H woofers, the speakers look and sound great, and I will be using them for LRC in a 5.1 HT system. Any other advice, comments are very welcome.

Very nice monitors -- IMHO, the 800 C-series are the best of the UREI Time-Aligned(tm).

the horn part # is 45-14926.

I doubt JBL/UREI stocks or sells the foam separately, and the availability of the horn may be limited as they stopped production in the mid-1990s. Everett Watt at JBL Professional may be a good resource...

Thanks for the tip. JBL Pro doesn't have jack for these monitors...too bad...but I guess they can't keep spares forever.

Have you had any experience with these? The components are 2215H, E145 with concentric 2425 Ti tweeters. Some of this was used with JBL Everests so should be quite OK for my purposes.

BTW, they sound super-smooth compared to my warehouse A7-500s...go much deeper too.

Sorry to hear that JBL no longer has spares

I do see the horns pop up on Ebay every now and again...

All the components in the 813C are top-rate: the JBL 2215 in particular replaces a stamped-frame Eminence 800W used in the previous 813, 813A and 813B.

The JBL E145 is massive and has very good transient behavior owing to its extremely powerful magnetic motor.

But the smoothness of the UREI 813Cs compared to your A7s is all in the crossover; the UREI network has MF and HF traps and equalisation, and LF/HF impedance compensation to boot. Stock Altec crossovers are, for the most part, simple 1950s symmetric Butterworth filters, with the exception of the 604-8K which has assymmetric filters but is still primitive nonetheless.

A true test of the importance of good crossover networks is a comparison of a stock Altec 604-8K (and crossover) to the UREI 811A, which uses an OEM 604-8K with the UREI TA network; the difference is stark, I can assure you.

Though they excelled at drivers, Altec (and pre-1980s JBL) never really produced proper crossovers...

Enjoy your 813C's; they're truly the pinnacle of 1980s coaxial monitor technology.
